Age is Just a Number Series - She is 78 and Can Kick the Ass of Many Beauty Queens

Yes you got it right! She is 78 and can beat many beauty queens including those in B-town. Even on a surprise visit to her house, you will find her dressed very elegantly. She will welcome you and serve with a smile in her beautiful house with much charm and poise. A lady, who never went to school but can fluently speak and write four languages viz. English, Hindi, Sindhi and Bhasa Indonesia. That is Rita Khemlani, my Aunt. She was born in Tando Mohammad Khan, Sindh, Pakistan in 1940 (the then in India) and lost her mother when she was hardly seven to the deadly disease of those days, Tuberculosis. She was raised by her Uncles and Aunts and after some time her father married again. In 1947 after the Indo-Pak partition, the family shifted to Jodhpur, Rajasthan and later to Jombang, Indonesia. From two, they became ten siblings and her life was filled with joy.

As a child, she was an extremely beautiful and ambitious girl. During those days, in Sindh, girls were strictly prohibited from academics and school, but she didn’t lose her hope and educated herself through Radio, newspapers, books and educated people around. As she grew, she also became fond of beautiful and stylish dresses and so would often try to stitch them on her own. Thus she herself  learnt stitching and designing too.
Then she learnt music from her younger Uncle and fell in love with the Harmonium. She still possesses the same harmonium on which she sings Bhajans in Satsangs
THE YOUNG RITA
Ask her and with a blush on her face, she tells about the day, she met her prince charming. He had made a list of questions to be asked from his prospective bride but the moment he saw - the beauty epitomized - he couldn’t say anything except a ‘Yes’.
She got married in Jakarta, Indonesia and had three children. Though misunderstandings blew away the true happiness out of  her married life, which had appeared to be a fairy tale but she didn’t let herself down to live a depressed life. She stayed motivated and nurtured her children.
Today, when her children are settled and she has no responsibility, she takes good care of herself, goes for Yoga, sings beautiful psalms, attend spiritual discourses, does charity and even goes to salon and parties. She is a beautiful human being, inside out, who is always grateful to Lord.
What I really appreciate about her and her siblings is that they all keep meeting and partying instead of cribbing for their sons and daughter-in-laws, who are usually running short of time.

Born in Pakistan (the then India) and later brought up in Indonesia, she is very Indian at heart. Although a widow, she inspires almost everyone around her to live a beautiful and fulfilled life.

I strongly feel that our elderly generation especially women should live a happy, inspiring and enthusiastic life like her, instead of filling themselves with fear, pain, remorse and self pity.

Helping Pooches

"The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated." -Mahatma Gandhi Dogs are man's best friend. Loving and feeding dogs is therapeutic and soothes one's soul.  Moreover, they automatically become the guards of the house. So how do you treat the dogs around you? Some feed almost all the stray dogs around them. Some feed only black stray dogs that too... just Saturdays. Some feed them with the leftovers. Then some love them, feed them, feel them and understand them. This lot notices and tries to provide health care to them. But how many work with such dedication for stray animals? Recently I met a young chap, Mridul, who is involved in rescuing, vaccinating and treating stray dogs and puppies. He came along with a compounder to treat a stray dog who wasn't well in our lane. A neighbour who had been giving shelter to the puppies provided an old sheet to Mridul. He sat with the dog in his lap. Though the dog, Biscuit, named by the children, w...

From Caterpillar to Butterfly

Transformation is a beautiful process and we all transform but transforming from a tiny seemingly insignificant camouflaged caterpillar to a colourful spectacular butterfly intrigues almost all of us. But isn’t it the way, we all evolve and revamp our life, when we really want to? I said ‘when we want to’ because the beautiful process of transformation starts from a strong internal urge to change and work on it.  This blog is all about such beautiful evolution. So before I introduce myself, I must tell you my story, my first step towards my dreams and my transformation. So here I present my first real life story: A New Step “Let us sit here, this rock is almost like a chair.” said daddy positioning his two-wheeler on the side path of the highway. “There is neither a tea shop nor a place to relax,” replied mom holding my hands.   “Come and Relax! Look at the river cutting the rocks with force and still flowing so swiftly. Breathe in the air, you won...

Five Things That Ruined My Life

Not long back, I was a ruffled, disturbed and an unhappy being; until I learnt what I should do and what I shouldn’t. Gradually, I fathomed five things that were ruining my life and maybe yours too: 1.       Expectations :  About ten years back, I was a person who had a lot of expectations. My list of expectations was long and penetrating. I expected my brother to take good care of our old widowed mother without realizing that it was my duty too and that we should together strive to make her independent and help her love the out life again. I expected my husband to understand what I needed without even speaking out, as if he had some magical powers and would comprehend my mind. I expected my infants to become a prodigy as soon as possible but that was so until I realized that they were too small and all they needed was love to grow; and understand and explore the world before following their own passion. The day I dropped all my expect...
